Nada como la Alegría de los holidays! This is my favorite time of the year. The family gets together, the food is extra delicious and the smell…there’s nothing like the smell of the holidays. The smell of apples and cinnamon or pine cones or what about warm gingerbread cookies? Oh man! That makes my heart fill with joy.
During this season, I love to keep my house smelling just like the holidays so I recently visited my local Walmart and found the new Glade® Winter Collection. What a joy! I found some of my favorite scents of all time and they have cute names like Cherish The Present™ (apple and cinnamon) or Be At Peace™ (Balsam Fir and Juniper) to name a few.
Something else that gives me alegría and makes my house smell like the holidays is baking. I love baking with spices like cinnamon, I also love the smell of citrus fruits.
Today I want to share one of my favorite latino recipes during this time of the year-Flan de Naranja! It’s so easy to prepare, I’ll show you step-by-step how to make this delicious postre.
Flan de Naranja Recipe:
Prep time:10 Minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
- 1 12oz can of evaporated milk
- 1 14oz can condensed milk
- 4 eggs
- 1 ½ teaspoon of vanilla
- The zest of one orange (about a tablespoon)
For the caramel sauce:
- 1 cup of white sugar
- ½ cup of water
Preparation: Preheat oven to 350°F
In a sauce pan over medium heat, melt the sugar with the water until golden. Carefully pour the syrup into a 9 inch round baking dish. Turn dish in circles to evenly coat the bottom and sides of it. Set aside. (See steps above 1 thru 3)
In a blender combine the evaporated milk, condensed milk, vanilla, eggs and orange zest until smooth. Pour the mixture into the baking dish with the caramel. Place the baking dish into a deep baking pan and add hot water (like a double boiler). Bake at 350 for about an hour or until center is just set. Remove from the oven and the double boiler; and let it cool completely before serving.
